Who is HyunA?
Kim Hyun-ah, known professionally as HyunA, is a South Korean singer-songwriter, rapper and model. She debuted as a member of the girl group Wonder Girls in 2007. Shortly after leaving the group, Hyuna joined 4Minute, a girl group. The group debuted in 2009 under Cube Entertainment. In 2010, Hyuna began a solo career with a style she described as performance-oriented music.
HyunA collapsed mid-performance
K-pop star HyunA recently faced a health scare when she fainted mid-performance during her set at the Waterbomb Macau festival. Videos circulating online showed the singer-songwriter losing consciousness while performing her hit track Bubble Pop! and being carried off the stage by security and backup dancers.
HyunA apologizes for the incident
Following the incident, HyunA took to social media to issue an emotional apology to her fans, known as A-ings, and reassure them of her condition. She wrote, I am truly, truly sorry… Although it was only a short time since the last performance, I wanted to show you a great side of me, but I feel like I wasn’t professional, and to be honest, I don’t remember anything that happened. I kept thinking about it this way and that, and I really wanted to tell you. ㅠㅠ Many Macau fans came, and of course, our A-ings, and everyone paid money to watch this stage, so I’m sorry, and truly, truly sorry again. Going forward, I will work on building up my stamina more and diligently work hard. It would be so wonderful if everything went exactly the way I wanted, but I will try my best..!! I want to say thank you for always admiring, cherishing, and loving me, despite my shortcomings, from a very young age until now And I am really okay! Please don’t worry about me! I hope everyone has a good night.. Sleep well”
HyunA’s rapid weight loss
The cause of the collapse is suspected to be a combination of her busy schedule and a dramatic weight loss effort. HyunA had recently revealed she lost 10 kg (about 22 pounds) in just one month. She shared an Instagram post on November 4, with the caption, “It’s so hard to change the first digit [on the scale] from the end of the 50s [kg]. I still have such a long way to go. How much have you been eating all this time, Kim Hyuna, Hyuna!!!” She began an intense diet after facing pressure and public speculation, including pregnancy rumours, following a noticeable weight gain after her marriage to singer Yong Jun-hyung.
HyunA’s medical condition
HyunA has a known medical condition called Vasovagal syncope. This condition causes fainting spells due to a sudden drop in heart rate and blood pressure, often triggered by stress, dehydration, or fatigue. The rapid weight loss and intense dieting may have aggravated her pre-existing condition. HyunA has previously disclosed that her stamina drops sharply and she collapses when her weight falls below 45 kilograms.

Fans’ reaction to her fainting and weight loss
Fans showed a lot of support to HyunA in her comment section. One person said, “The problem is not stamina or professionalism. K-pop companies must absolutely understand they need to treat idols correctly in terms of health and work charge. Even considering their view of it, idols look prettier when they’re healthy and happy than when they’re overworked and trying unnecessary and unhealthy weight losses. How can’t they understand that ? Big support to you.” Another person said, “I really feel bad for Hyuna. People bullied her about her weight to the point where she pushed herself way too hard to lose it, and she eventually collapsed on stage. HyunA’s past controversies
On August 2, 2018, Hyuna revealed that she had been in a relationship with Pentagon member E’Dawn since May 2016. They got engaged on February 3, 2022, with the couple posting the announcement on Instagram. In November 2022, Hyuna posted on her Instagram account that the couple had separated. On July 8, 2024, Hyuna’s agency announced that she would be marrying singer Yong Jun-hyung. HyunA faced backlash for her marriage to Yong Jun-hyung due to his indirect involvement in the 2019 Burning Sun scandal. He was accused of receiving and watching illegally filmed videos from a chat room, which led to public criticism. Some fans are also disappointed because HyunA was seen by some as an icon of female empowerment in K-pop. Her relationship with Yong Jun-hyung, given his past, is seen as a betrayal of those values by some fans.
