10 Richest Districts in India: Gurugram no longer #1, guess which southern district tops the list

India’s growth story has a new twist–Gurugram is no longer the country’s richest district. According to the Economic Survey 2024-25, the crown now rests on the shoulders of Rangareddy in Telangana, which has surged ahead thanks to Hyderabad’s booming IT corridor, world-class pharma clusters, and sprawling tech parks.

With a per capita GDP of Rs 11.46 lakh, Rangareddy has edged out Haryana’s corporate hub, showing just how strongly southern India is shaping the country’s economic future.

Gurgaon, which had long dominated the rankings, now takes the second spot with a per capita GDP of Rs 9.05 lakh. Bengaluru Urban follows closely behind at number three, underlining the south’s deepening role as India’s tech powerhouse. Together, these districts continue to attract global corporations, startups, and top-tier talent, keeping them at the heart of India’s economic expansion.

But the list is not all about metro giants. Surprises include Solan in Himachal Pradesh, which punches above its weight with thriving pharmaceutical and food processing industries, securing fifth place. Goa’s twin districts (North and South) and Sikkim’s cluster of districts prove that tourism, hospitality, and sustainable development models can generate wealth on par with industrial hubs.

Financial capital Mumbai makes it to the ninth spot, its services-heavy economy still powering growth, while Noida (Gautam Buddha Nagar) continues its rapid rise with a mix of IT, manufacturing, and real estate.

Dakshina Kannada, with its port-driven trade and strong education base, adds another southern success story to the top 10.

These rankings reveal that India’s wealth is no longer concentrated only in metros like Delhi and Mumbai. Smaller states and specialised economies are rising fast, showing how IT, industry, tourism, and trade together form the mosaic of India’s prosperity.
