The Agricultural and Processed Food Products Export Development Authority (APEDA) on Thursday created history by flagging off the first-ever export consignment of fresh black plum (Jamun fruit – Kundana variety) from Karnataka to London.
This initiative marks a significant milestone in promoting India’s traditional and region-specific fruits in international markets. Until now, only frozen Jamun had been exported from the country.
According to APEDA, the Jamun fruits—specifically the Kundana variety—have been sourced directly from a Farmer Producer Organisation (FPO).
During the virtual flag-off, Abhishek Dev, Chairman of APEDA, was present along with officials from the Department of Horticulture, Mango Board, and the Regional Plant Quarantine Station.
During the event, Dev praised Anantha Organic Products for sourcing from FPOs and stated that such initiatives directly benefit farmers. He reaffirmed APEDA’s commitment to supporting exporters and promoting indigenous fruits like Jamun on global platforms.
The consignment was packed at a packhouse approved by APEDA and the Plant Quarantine Authority, established by the Karnataka Government under the Department of Horticulture.
Previously, exports were limited to processed forms such as pulp or seed powder.
