Good news, owners of 15-year-old vehicles! Centre extends exemption period; no change in NCR rules

The central government has extended an option for owners of 15-20-year-old vehicles to opt for vehicle registration renewals. Currently, the validity of vehicles expires after the first 15 years from the date of first registration, restricting them from plying on the country’s roads legally.

With the latest change, those owning vehicles “older than 15 years but not exceeding 20 years from the date of first registration” will be able to make their use for an additional five years after re-registering by paying certain fees, according to an official notification.

The change — effective immediately — will be across the country except in the NCR, according to the notification.

Currently, petrol vehicles older than 15 years and diesel vehicles older than 10 years are temporarily allowed to ply on the roads across the NCR.

This is owing to an interim Supreme Court order that prevents authorities from taking coercive action against such vehicles, under the condition that they comply with other road fitness and emission standards.

However, those owning such vehicles have a different challenge to deal with. Fuel pumps in the national capital are required to deny supplying fuel to end-of-life vehicles, with effect from July 1.
