In the digitized world, finding an authentic connection is an overwhelming task, amidst all the madness of dating apps, AI generated algorithms, compatibility scores and endless supply of profiles, finding something real and authentic is a hard task. And that is precisely why Param Sundari is such a delightful surprise. The film goes beyond the digital stimulations, and reconnects what it feels like to be loved, or love, but does it gently, teasingly, and playfully. Emotions aren’t codes or punch keys, they are felts, if you allow them.
The film’s all about lifting the digital fog, and connecting with simple yet complicated emotions, to ease off on constant buzzing, feel something. The film takes us beyond compatibility and algorithm and truly connect.
Director Tushar Jalota, very affectionately handled this stunning romantic drama, it feels like a warm hug. Its comforting, cozy, and just what you didn’t realize you needed. From the opening frame, the film just pulls you in, there’s a rhythm to it, a beat which is consistent and let you lean in and feel it too. Every element of the film is in the right place, be it direction, writing, acting, cinematography, music, all synchronized to make a one pulse pulsating, feel good romantic drama. This isn’t just a regular rom-com, it’s an experience and a chance, to fall in love all over again.
The film kicks off with Param (Sidharth Malhotra), an quintessential Delhi entrepreneur, a tech mogul who’s out to transform dating with his new matchmaking app. But his father (Sanjay Kapoor), tired of his attitude towards love, dares him to locate a soulmate through his own method, and thins starts to change. Meet Sundari (Janhvi Kapoor), a firecracker Malayali lady who doesn’t give a hoot about algorithms. She’s grounded, honest, and uncompromisingly unpredictable.
What follows is a light-hearted yet rather relatable and contemporary love story in the time of technology. The movie doesn’t take digs at the digital world, it merely questions: Can technology ever be a substitute for timing, chemistry, or that elusive attraction between two individuals.
Sidharth Malhotra gives his best shot, balancing Param’s smugness with vulnerability as the narrative takes shape. He’s witty, flawed, and easy to root for. But it’s Janhvi Kapoor who gives the best performance. As Sundari, she is real, she packs her performance with gentle power, poise, and authenticity. Her accent, mannerisms, and emotional nuance are perfect. This is a breakthrough role for her as an actor.
Sidharth and Janhvi’s chemistry is undeniable, it’s so refreshing to watch both of them not only in the romancing each other, but in the way that they push and reflect one another. From shoulder-rubbing to harsh moments of truth, their relationship is both aspirational and earthy. It’s not a fairytale but something more raw and real, a reminder that love, when authentic, is messy but marvellous.
The ensemble, adds much needed quirks and push, Sanjay Kapoor with his effortless charm and perfect comic timing, lands every Delhi-Wala-Dad punch lines and wisdom. Actor Manjot Singh is riots as usual, Inayat Verma gives out a seasoned performance, and Renji Panicker and Siddhartha Shankar bring authenticity to Sundari’s world.
The film travels from North to South, needless to say its visually dazzling and earthy. From the concrete jungle of Delhi’s start-up scene to the lush, unfiltered beauty of Kerala’s backwaters, the whole shift in the landscape is portrayed beautifully in the film. The production design is lavish, and the costumes, especially Janhvi’s elegant saris, they will be popular soon enough!
The music is film’s emotional backbone. With six stellar tracks, the soundtrack does the heavy lifting of bringing every romantic beat to life. Whether it’s the mischievous Pardesiya, the sensual Bheegi Saree, the banger Danger, or the heartbreakingly lovely Sunn Mere Yaar Ve and Chand Kagaz Ka, every number hits the spot. Title song Sundari Ke Pyar Mein is already a chartbuster — and rightly so.
Produced by Dinesh Vijan under Maddock Films, the beauty of the film lies in how honestly it reflects a generation that’s gotten a little too comfortable outsourcing love to algorithms. The film gently touches your heart, and allows you to feel again, invite you to fall in love again!
