Sensex, Nifty50 extend losses to 3rd straight day; investors lose Rs 11 lakh crore

Domestic equity benchmarks fell on Friday, continuing to fall for a third straight trading session. Selling pressure in energy shares — with RIL falling about two per cent — weighed on both gauges, along with IT stocks, though gains in FMCG stocks lent some support. Investor sentiment remained muted on Dalal Street after an additional US duty of 25 per cent on Indian exports into the world’s largest economy took effect this week, taking the total levy to 50 per cent — one of the Trump 2.0 administration’s highest tariffs on America’s trade partners.

The additional duty took effect at 9:31 am on Wednesday.

Closing Bell | How Nifty50, Nifty Bank, Sensex fared

Both headline indices fell 0.3 per cent for the day. The Sensex gave up 270.9 points to settle at 79,809.7 while the Nifty50 lost 74.1 points to 24,426.9.

The Nifty Bank — whose 12 constituents include stocks of SBI and HDFC Bank — fell 164.7 points, or 0.3 per cent, to close at 53,655.7, after gyrating in a 480-point range around the flatline during the session.

Investors lost Rs 11.4 lakh crore in wealth in three days as BSE-listed companies’ market capitalisation (mcap) fell to Rs 443.7 lakh crore, according to provisional exchange data.

Top Nifty50 gainers and losers

M&M, Reliance, Infosys, Apollo Hospitals Enterprises, Adani Enterprises, Tata Motors and JSW Steel — closing between 0.9 per cent and 2.9 per cent lower — were the worst hit among the 27 losers in the Nifty50 basket.

On the other hand, ITC, Shriram Finance, BEL, L&T, Asian Paints, Trent and UltraTech — closing between 0.9 per cent and 2.2 per cent higher — were the top gainers in the 50-blue-chip pack.

Top Sensex movers

RIL, Infosys and HDFC Bank were the biggest contributors to the losses in both main barometers, whereas gains in ITC and L&T helped them avoid deeper losses.

Midcap and smallcap stocks

Among broader indices, Nifty Midcap 100 and Nifty Smallcap 100 fell 0.6 per cent and 0.4 per cent, respectively.

Overall market breadth was skewed in favour of the bears, with nine rising stocks against every 10 falling ones on BSE.
