Tata Motors on Sunday announced benefits worth up to Rs 2.55 lakh on its models in light of the GST 2.0 rate cuts. The carmaker said that the deals were its “best ever offers” on every car.

The Tata group auto major’s announcement came as lower tax rates under the Centre’s GST 2.0 reform were set to take effect on Monday, September 22.

Tata Motors cuts rates after GST 2.0 announcement

Earlier this month, Tata Motors one of the first auto manufacturers in the country to announce lower prices in tandem with the central government’s GST rationalisation move.

Tata Motors doled out discounts across its current ICE-powered fleet after the introduction of GST 2.0 rate cuts by the finance minister-headed GST Council this month, announcing discounts ranging from Rs 65,000 to Rs 1.55 lakh on its vehicles.

GST 2.0 Rate Cut on Automobiles

At its 56th meeting since the launch of the indirect tax in 2017, the GST Council announced a slew of changes in taxes across several industries, with the broad rate for automobiles by 10 percentage points to 18 per cent.

Here’s a summary of five major changes in the GST 2.0 reform:

  • Petrol and petrol hybrid, LPG, and CNG passenger cars below 1200 cc in the sub-4 metre category will now attract a 1,000-basis-point lower GST of 18 per cent
  • Diesel and diesel hybrid cars below 1500 cc in the sub-4 metre category will also be taxed at 18 per cent, instead of 28 per cent
  • Three-wheelers will be taxed at 18 per cent instead of 28 per cent
  • Motorcycles up to 350 cc will be taxed at 18 per cent instead of 28 per cent
  • Goods vehicles will also attract an 18 per cent levy instead of 28 per cent

The country’s automotive industry welcomed the government’s next-generation GST revisions.  

Most financial experts expect the lion’s share of these lower taxes for businesses to be passed on to the end-consumer.
