Tripura has registered one of its strongest years for tourism, with both domestic and international arrivals showing double-digit growth, according to official figures reported by ANI. Between 2023 and 2024, domestic tourist arrivals rose 64.07 per cent, from 0.366 million to 0.601 million. Foreign arrivals grew 36.15 per cent, climbing from 0.067 million to 0.091 million. With this growth, Tripura continues to be the second most visited state for foreign tourists in the North-east, behind Sikkim.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury said the state government’s push on infrastructure and site development had been crucial. He noted that several spots long overlooked were being revived and promoted. “We have undertaken a series of initiatives to develop tourist spots that were neglected during the previous Left Front government. Recently, I, along with officials from Tripura Tourism, met Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and DoNER Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia regarding upcoming tourism projects, which we hope will be sanctioned soon,” Chowdhury, ANI told. The minister also underlined the government’s focus on upgrading tourist lodges to improve visitor experience and boost revenue.
Projects and opportunities ahead
Officials pointed out that the rise in tourist numbers has been backed by better road links, improved lodging facilities and renewed focus on cultural attractions. The government is also considering projects such as restoring old temples, adding more homestays and promoting eco-tourism in areas like Dumbur and Jampui Hills. To support these efforts, Tripura has sought external funding. An Asian Development Bank loan of more than Rs 180 crore has been lined up to strengthen infrastructure and make travel within the state easier.
The growing footfall is seen as a chance to create jobs and boost local enterprise. From transport operators and food vendors to handicraft sellers and guides, a wide range of small businesses stand to benefit as more visitors arrive.
