The movie world is mourning the loss of beloved actress Diane Keaton.
The actress died in California, according to People.
A spokesperson told the outlet, “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”
Many celebrities and fans alike are remembering her extraordinary career and ability to make a role her own as they come to terms with the huge loss for Hollywood.
Mandy Moore, who played Keaton’s daughter in Because I Said So, penned a touching tribute to her on-screen mother.
“They say don’t meet your heroes but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mum’ for a few months. An honour of a lifetime. What an incandescent human Di is and was,” she wrote.
“I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.”
Keaton’s peer Jane Fonda, who she starred alongside in Book Club, also shared a touching tribute.
“It’s hard to believe…or accept…that Diane has passed,” she said.
“She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”
Fellow cast member Candice Bergen told People, “This is a huge loss, both personally and for all of us”.
“Diane was a true artist – tremendously gifted and uniquely talented in so many disciplines, yet also modest and wonderfully eccentric. I will miss her terribly.”
Rounding out the Book Club cast, Mary Steenburgen said in a statement to People, “Diane was magic. There was no one, nor will there ever be, anyone like her. I loved her and felt blessed to be her friend. My love to her family. What a wonder she was!!!”
Bette Midler, Keaton’s co-star in The First Wives Club, wrote on Instagram, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”
Kimberly Williams-Paisley, who played Keaton’s daughter in the Father of the Bride movies, shared memories of them sharing the screen.

“Diane, working with you will always be one of the highlights of my life,” she wrote on Instagram, “You are one of a kind, and it was thrilling to be in your orbit for a time. Thank you for your kindness, your generosity, your talent, and above all, your laughter. 🙏🏻🕊️💔❤️❤️❤️.”
KaDee Strickland, Keaton’s co-star in Something’s Gotta Give, recalled filming her first movie with the Hollywood powerhouse.
“SOMETHING’S GOTTA GIVE was one of my first jobs, and I was privileged to work opposite one of my greatest heroes. @diane_keaton wore the cape the entire time,” she wrote, sharing photos from the film, “She was welcoming, kind, & so very focused. And, of course, so funny. An artist of the highest calibre.”
Elizabeth Perkins remembered the actress for her impeccable fashion sense, with a tribute alongside a photo of her wearing a Gucci pantsuit and loafers.
“Ms Keaton, you were a national treasure, with style, grace, intelligence and immense talent. Thank you for being my modern heroine and showing a young actress what it meant to be gutsy, fully self-deprecating but assured and to always be open, questioning and brave,” Perkins penned.
“Complex, eccentric and so gifted, you owned it…and wow, did you set the bar. You will always be my Annie Hall. Gosh, this cuts deep.💔.”
Actress Octavia Spencer penned a lengthy tribute to the legendary actress.
“Today we lost a true original,” Spencer penned on Instagram, along with photos of the star.
“@diane_keaton wasn’t just an actress: she was a force. a woman who showed us that being yourself is the most powerful thing you can be
“From Annie Hall to Something’s Gotta Give, she made every role unforgettable. But beyond the screen, she brought joy, laughter, and style that was all her own. Thank you, Diane, for reminding us that authenticity never goes out of fashion.”
Luke Evans shared a photo of himself with the late actress as her remembered her.
“What a sad day. Rest in peace #dianekeaton. Such a brilliant actor, a kind heart and full of graciousness with a shining independent spirit,” he wrote.
Piers Morgan penned on X, formerly Twitter, “RIP Diane Keaton, 79. Oscar-winning star of Annie Hall, brilliant in The Godfather and Father of the Bride movies. One of Hollywood’s greatest actresses, and a delightful lady. Sad news.”
Mario Lopez remembered her in one of her biggest roles, posting a behind-the-scenes snap of herself and Al Pacino on the set of The Godfather. “RIP Diane Keaton…” he added.
