Justin Trudeau’s ex-wife shares cryptic video after Katy Perry kissing photos

Former Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau‘s ex-wife has taken to Instagram for the first time since the apparent confirmation of his relationship with pop star Katy Perry.

Sophie Grégoire Trudeau, a bestselling author and speaker, married Justin in 2005. However, the pair announced their separation in August 2023 after 18 years of marriage.

Sophie took to Instagram overnight to share a message to her followers, just hours after photos of her ex-husband kissing Perry on a yacht were beamed around the world.

The photos of the pair on the top deck of Perry’s yacht seemingly confirm speculation the two are dating, and comes just months after news broke that the singer and fiancé Orlando Bloom had split.

Now Sophie, who shares three children with Justin, has taken to Instagram with a video and accompanying post which seems to give the seal of approval to the new couple.

“Do you find that sometimes we forget that nothing we love was ever meant to be kept; the people, the places, even the moments that once felt… infinite,” she said.

“Time asks us to not cling to them, and yet we do. I do because to hold on feels safer than to let go.

“But love was never about possession; it was always about presence – the present moment, and when we release what we cannot keep, we make space for the truth of connection, intimacy, the memory… for the lesson [and] for the way a single smile can echo across a lifetime.

“Grief also lives there. I lost my dad in the past year and I feel that with grief also comes grace.

“So maybe love’s deepest teaching is this: to stand open-hearted in the face of impermanence, to honour what has been and to trust that letting go is also a form of keeping inside us where no loss can erase it in a way.”

She then invited her followers to take a breath and “remember someone or something you have had to release”.

She uploaded the video along with the comment, “Nothing we love is meant to be kept forever.

“People, places, moments – they’re all meant to be lived, not possessed.

“The beauty is in the being there: in the shared laugh, the quiet glance, the heartbeat of a place before it changes.

“Connection isn’t something we hold – it’s something we feel while it’s here.

“Let yourself love what’s here, without trying to make it stay.”

Trudeau was Canada’s prime minister when he announced in an Instagram post in August 2023 that the two had separated.

“Hi everyone, Sophie and I would like to share the fact that after many meaningful and difficult conversations, we have made the decision to separate,” the post said.

“As always, we remain a close family with deep love and respect for each other and for everything we have built and will continue to build.

“For the well-being of our children, we ask that you respect our and their privacy. Thank you.”

At the time, his office also released a statement saying the couple had “worked to ensure that all legal and ethical steps with regards to their decision to separate have been taken, and will continue to do so moving forward”.

In a May 2024 episode of the Next Question with Katie Couric podcast, Grégoire spoke about the separation.

“It hurts deeply, because in a way we have these two words in our language. You know, marriage is ‘success’. Separation and divorce is ‘failure’,” she said.

“But life happens in between. And we dramatise our relationships because we are insecure, we are afraid to be abandoned, we are afraid to be alone as human beings.

“It is not in our nature to be alone and just living alone.”

Justin Trudeau announced in January he would not contest the next Canadian election as party leader due to ‘internal battles’. He left the role in March.

Meanwhile, Katy Perry and Orlando confirmed in July they had split, with the news coming one week after multiple media outlets reported the couple had broken up after nine years together.

Perry was performing her sold out tour in Australia when news first broke.

“Due to the abundance of recent interest and conversation surrounding Orlando Bloom and Katy Perry’s relationship, representatives have confirmed that Orlando and Katy have been shifting their relationship over the past many months to focus on co-parenting,” reps later told Page Six.

“They will continue to be seen together as a family, as their shared priority is – and always will be – raising their daughter with love, stability and mutual respect.”

That same month, TMZ reported Perry and Trudeau were spotted dining together in Montreal, Canada.
