Samsung Galaxy XR makes its official and expensive debut

TL;DR

  • Samsung has officially announced its new Galaxy XR device.
  • All apps built on Android will work on the extended reality headset.
  • Galaxy XR is available today for $1,799.99.
  • It’s an extra $249.99 if you want the travel case or controllers.

After all of this time, it’s hard to believe that Samsung first began teasing its extended reality (XR) headset — Galaxy XR — in early 2023. Since then, the tech giant has drip-fed us information about the device, with occasional glimpses at the actual hardware peppered in. Today, all that waiting pays off as the company makes it official and launches the Galaxy XR in the US.

The headpiece formerly known as Project Moohan makes its debut tonight. This isn’t the first time Samsung has dabbled in XR, as it has previously released a phone-powered device called the Gear VR, and later a headset built for PC VR known as the Odyssey. However, Galaxy XR is Samsung’s biggest investment in the space so far.

This device was built in collaboration with Google and Qualcomm. On Google’s part, it was responsible for developing the headset’s OS, Android XR, while Qualcomm was in charge of developing the chip that powers the hardware, the Snapdragon XR2 Plus Gen 2.

The Galaxy XR is a standalone device, meaning it’s fully operational without the need to plug it into a computer or connect it to a phone. You’ll notice that it has a fairly slim build compared to other headsets, which helps to cut down on the overall weight. Speaking of weight, the device weighs 545g, which is a good deal lighter than the 600g-650g Apple Vision Pro. That should help with keeping you feeling comfortable as the Galaxy XR sits on your face.

To help out with the ergonomics, the headset features a cushion for the forehead and a strap that wraps around the head for support. This should not only keep the device in place, but also help with minimizing facial discomfort. On the left side of the strap, there’s a connector for the external battery (302g) that powers the device. Meanwhile, the right side features a touchpad for controlling the UI. You’ll also find a dial in the back for adjusting the fit.

Additionally, there are two buttons on the top of the headset for turning the device on/launching Gemini and controlling the volume. On the bottom, there are four air vents and two sensors. Meanwhile, the front of the device features seven sensors hiding underneath the glass. There’s also a detachable light shield, if you want to block more light.

Galaxy XR experiences

According to Samsung, Galaxy XR works with all apps built for Android. This should give users an extensive library of content to play around with right out of the box. Additionally, you’ll be able to stream shows and sports, play VR games, and create and edit videos in 3D.

However, it will also have experiences built specifically for the headset. A few of these experiences will be:

  • Gemini: Users will have access to Gemini to find content and ask questions.
  • Travel and search with Google Maps: You can navigate to any place on Google Maps in 3D. You can also ask Gemini for suggestions and other information.
  • Circle to Search: When pass-through mode is enabled, you take your hand and draw a circle around anything in your environment. This will activate a search, much like how CtS works on phones.
  • Auto spatialize videos and photos: Google Photos with Media Auto Spatialization will automatically add depth and dimension to 2D videos and photos.

Galaxy XR battery life and accessories

As mentioned earlier, Galaxy XR will have an external battery, just like the Vision Pro. This battery will provide up to 2.5 hours of video playback. You can expect something closer to two hours for general use. That’s not a whole lot of time, but you’ll still be able to use the headset as the battery charges, if that’s any consolation.

Samsung’s new headgear works with typical third-party controllers, as well as third-party VR controllers. The tech giant has also made controllers for its headset, as well as a travel case. However, you’ll probably want to go the third-party route because you’ll need to fork over $249 just for the two Samsung controllers. It will cost an additional $249 for the carrying case, which holds the headset, controllers, and battery.
