Victoria Beckham talks about ‘the storm’ during 26-year marriage with David Beckham

Victoria Beckham has made a rare podcast appearance as she continues to promote her self-titled docuseries.

Getting candid in the chat with Alex Cooper on Call Her Daddy, the Spice Girls singer turned fashion mogul opened up about her marriage with David Beckham and her eating disorder.

The mother-of-four also spoke about her kids, including son Brooklyn, but didn’t address the family rift that’s reportedly occurred in the years since he married Nicola Peltz Beckham.

The interview started affectionately, as both women spoke about their admiration for the other.

Victoria soon began opening up about her dyslexia and polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) diagnosis as a teen – both of which she’s spoken about publicly before.

While Cooper didn’t ask the hardest-hitting questions, she alluded to the alleged Rebecca Loos affair and the reported family rift, allowing the designer to broach both topics as little or as much as she wanted to.

Victoria returned the narrative where possible to her fashion empire and love of fashion but said she often felt more defined by her four years as Posh Spice than her almost 20 years as a designer.

Here are all the things were learned about the 51-year-old in the 90-minute interview:

Victoria and David have ‘ridden the storm’ in their marriage

Cooper asked how the high-powered couple handle speculation around their marriage. They’d both discussed the infidelity claims in David’s 2024 docuseries, Beckham.

Victoria didn’t give much away other than to say they’ve stuck by each other and proved the doubters wrong.

“We’ve had so much thrown at us,” Victoria said.

“And we were talking about it because we’ve recently celebrated our 26th wedding anniversary – by the way, people said it wouldn’t work, 26 years! – we’ve had so much thrown at us and we’ve always just been there together and just ridden the storm, ridden the damn storm.”

She spoke about their early years of dating and felt the need to clarify something else they’d discussed in David’s documentary – about them meeting in car parks in an effort to keep their relationship under wraps.

”There was nothing dodgy going on in the car park, not as seedy as it sounds,” she laughed, before adding there later came a time where he had to jump out of hotel windows “and do a walk of shame”.

A Spice Girl at the time, Victoria revealed she made the first move on the then Manchester United footballer after seeing him with his sister and family instead of at the bar with the lads post-match.

When David proposed, he’d asked for her father’s permission first, because they’re “both quite traditional” but Victoria kept the details private, only saying it took place when they were “at a hotel up north”.

“David looks like the dancing man emoji – that’s what the dancing man wears but he owns it,” she said.

Nowadays, the couple’s ”perfect night in is a glass of wine in the vegetable patch” that David created in their country home.

‘I didn’t feel fulfilled’

Victoria reflected on speaking out in the series about how she really felt after becoming a mother and giving up her career.

“I feel ashamed to admit that I didn’t feel fulfilled,” she told Cooper.

While she hopes it helps others in a similar position who feel like they can’t talk about the taboo topic, the working mum added she likes supporting her husband.

“On one hand I’ll say ‘yes, I’m a feminist’ but I’m also happy to be there and show up and support my husband and he does exactly the same for me,” she said.

She also joked that by the time the couple had three young sons it changed the game.

“That’s not parenting, that shit’s crowd control,” she joked.

Who helped her create a “healthy relationship” with food

In her docuseries, the 51-year-old spoke publicly for the first time about her eating disorder.

Victoria was surprised by how far and wide her comments resonated after decades of feeling like she couldn’t tell anyone about it.

She admits when she was younger and in the “fat-free” era of the ’90s, she knew the calories for everything in supermarket.

“I remember being terrified of eating any fat,” Victoria told Cooper.

“It takes over.”

The former Spice Girl didn’t know who she could trust so didn’t seek professional help.

She ultimately changed her habits by learning more and with David’s help.

“I managed to do it myself and to turn an unhealthy obsession with food into a healthy relationship,” Victoria said.

“Understanding it’s about balance, it’s about being healthy, it’s about working out and David helped me do that. David was the one who changed my workout around.”

“I told her I was present for many years but not really present,” Victoria said.

Leave nepo babies alone

Victoria and David have three adult children – Brooklyn, 26, Romeo, 23, and Cruz, 20 – with Romeo following in his dad’s football footsteps and Cruz following in his mum’s music footsteps.

Brooklyn has also attempted to become a professional photographer and YouTuber over the years, with limited success.

But the protective mama bear wants people to back off on their assumptions the kids are nepo babies.

“Give the kids a chance, it’s not their fault,” she said.

The mum of four gave the example of Cruz, saying he “plays about 10 different instruments” and “writes all of his own songs” but had a “real grassroots approach” and played in pubs around the country to hone his craft.

When asked about how the couple handle letting their older kids make their own way in the world, Victoria didn’t hint at any tension and simply said “communication is key”.

“We’re such a close family and communication is key and we always let them know, anything they want to talk about, this is a safe forum but they’ve got to go on their own journeys themselves,” she told Cooper.
