India is expected to receive its first ‘Made in India’ Airbus H125 helicopter by early 2027, with the rotorcraft also slated for export across South Asia, IANS reported. The helicopter will be assembled at India’s first private-sector Final Assembly Line (FAL) for helicopters, being set up by Tata Advanced Systems Limited (TASL) in Vemagal, Karnataka.
Private-sector assembly marks a milestone
The new assembly line will be the first of its kind in India’s private sector and represents a significant step in expanding the country’s aerospace manufacturing capabilities. “India is an ideal helicopter country. A ‘Made in India’ helicopter will help develop this market and position helicopters as an essential tool for nation-building,” said Jurgen Westermeier, President and Managing Director of Airbus India and South Asia. He added that the project strengthens Airbus’ multi-faceted partnership with Tata.
Civil and para-public applications
The H125 helicopters produced locally will serve a wide range of applications, including emergency medical services, disaster relief, tourism, and law enforcement. They are also expected to support infrastructure and connectivity projects in remote areas. The project is designed to boost India’s civil aviation capabilities while creating opportunities for exports in the South Asian region.

Defence variant to feature high localisation
Plans are in place for a military variant, the H125M, to be manufactured at the same facility. This version will include a high degree of indigenised components and technologies, meeting the Indian armed forces’ requirements for a light multi-role helicopter, particularly suited for operations in the Himalayan region.
“Tata Advanced Systems is proud to be the first private sector company in India to build helicopters. This initiative will bolster both civil and defence needs,” said Sukaran Singh, Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of TASL. He noted that TASL’s expertise in producing fixed-wing aircraft and helicopters positions it well to meet India’s growing aerospace demands.
