ATM PIN Fraud Alert! Can pressing ‘Cancel’ twice at ATM prevent PIN theft? Here’s what government says

ATM PIN Fraud Alert: A post circulating on social media claims that pressing the “Cancel” button twice before inserting your card at an ATM can help detect hidden skimmers or prevent fraud. With both digital and physical ATM scams on the rise, many users are asking: Is this claim true, or is it just another internet fraud?”

The government has now stepped in to clarify the claim.

According to the Press Information Bureau’s (PIB) Fact Check handle on Twitter, the post—falsely attributed to the Reserve Bank of India (RBI)—is completely fake. “A post falsely attributed to @RBI claims that pressing ‘cancel’ twice on an ATM before a transaction can prevent PIN theft,” PIB Fact Check tweeted.

The RBI has made no such statement, and the claim has been officially debunked.

PIB tweeted: “This statement is FAKE & has NOT been issued by RBI.” The public has been advised to stay alert and follow proper security practices during ATM transactions.
