Diane Keaton‘s cause of death has been revealed by her loved ones.
Her heartbroken family revealed she died from pneumonia on October 11.
“The Keaton family are very grateful for the extraordinary messages of love and support they have received these past few days on behalf of their beloved Diane, who passed away from pneumonia on October 11,” the family said in a statement to People.

The family added that they would love to see some donations made in her memory to animal groups or food banks.
“She loved her animals and she was steadfast in her support of the unhoused community, so any donations in her memory to a local food bank or an animal shelter would be a wonderful and much appreciated tribute to her,” the statement concluded.
The world was left in shock when news broke that the Hollywood icon died in California on October 11.
A spokesperson told the outlet: “There are no further details available at this time, and her family has asked for privacy in this moment of great sadness.”

Keaton was known for films including The First Wives Club, Father of the Bride, The Godfather and Something’s Gotta Give and was one of the Hollywood greats.

It comes after a friend of the late star told People: ”She declined very suddenly, which was heartbreaking for everyone who loved her.
“It was so unexpected, especially for someone with such strength and spirit.”
In March, she listed her “dream home” in Los Angeles for $29 million.
She had spoken in depth about her previous health battles in the past, including with cancer and an eating disorder.
The Godfather star was first diagnosed with skin cancer at age 21.

“It’s a family history,” she told the Los Angeles Times in 2015.
“I remember my Auntie Martha had skin cancer so bad they removed her nose. My father had basal skin cancer, and my brother had it. It’s tricky with this skin cancer. That’s why you’ve got to put the sunblock on.”
Decades later she was diagnosed with squamous cell cancer (SCC), which is the second most common form of skin cancer according to The Skin Cancer Foundation.
According to the Times it took two surgeries to remove the cancer.
She also battled bulimia in her 20s.
The actress became self-conscious about her weight after being asked to lose weight for a role on Broadway, which set off her battle with the eating disorder.
She wrote about it in her 2011 memoir, Then Again, later sharing that she chose to go public with her story because it was a part of her life and keeping secrets doesn’t help.
“I told the truth. I have nothing to hide. It’s not relevant, but for me it feels good. I think I’m a sister to all the rest of the women – and I’m sure men as well – who have had some kind of eating disorder, and I’m a part of the team,” she told HuffPost in 2011.
Following the news of her shock death, many celebrities and fans alike remembered her extraordinary career and ability to make a role her own as they came to terms with the huge loss for Hollywood.
Mandy Moore, who played Keaton’s daughter in Because I Said So, penned a touching tribute to her on-screen mother.
“They say don’t meet your heroes but I got to work with one of mine and even call her ‘mum’ for a few months. An honour of a lifetime. What an incandescent human Di is and was,” she wrote.
“I am so sad she’s gone for all the reasons but also because it felt like she’d be here forever, dazzling us with her talent and charm (and her style, c’mon)!!! One of the very best to ever do it. All my love to her children and loved ones.”
Keaton’s peer Jane Fonda, who she starred alongside in Book Club, also shared a touching tribute.
“It’s hard to believe… or accept… that Diane has passed,” she said.
“She was always a spark of life and light, constantly giggling at her own foibles, being limitlessly creative…in her acting, her wardrobe, her books, her friends, her homes, her library, her world view. Unique is what she was. And, though she didn’t know it or wouldn’t admit it, man she was a fine actress!”
Bette Midler, Keaton’s co-star in The First Wives Club, wrote on Instagram, “The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died. I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star. What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!”
Actress Octavia Spencer penned a lengthy tribute to the legendary actress.
“Today we lost a true original,” Spencer penned on Instagram, along with photos of the star.
“@diane_keaton wasn’t just an actress: she was a force. a woman who showed us that being yourself is the most powerful thing you can be
“From Annie Hall to Something’s Gotta Give, she made every role unforgettable. But beyond the screen, she brought joy, laughter, and style that was all her own. Thank you, Diane, for reminding us that authenticity never goes out of fashion.”
Director Paul Feig shared, “I was so honoured to call Diane Keaton a friend. She was an amazingly kind and creative person who also just happened to be a Hollywood legend. She has been taken from us far too soon. We will miss you, Diane.”
