First Trade: Sensex opens 212 pts lower; Nifty below 24,900 on global weakness

Market opening bell: Indian equities opened lower on Tuesday, August 26, tracking weak global cues and rising geopolitical tensions. Investors turned cautious ahead of fresh US tariffs set to take effect from Wednesday.

The BSE Sensex declined 211 points, or 0.26 per cent, to around 81,425, while the Nifty50 slipped 76 points, or 0.30 per cent, to 24,892, falling below the psychological 24,900-mark.

Sentiment soured further after US President Donald Trump moved to fire Fed Governor Lisa Cook on allegations of falsifying mortgage documents. Trump also threatened export curbs on semiconductor chips in retaliation for global digital services taxes, intensifying global uncertainty.
