Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman turned 66 on Monday, August 18. On this occasion, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended birthday greetings to her.
Taking to the social media platform X, he praised her contributions, saying her efforts are playing a vital role in realising the vision of a Viksit and Aatmanirbhar Bharat. “Praying for her long and healthy life,” PM Modi added in his message.
The FM has had a distinguished political career spanning several decades. She is currently serving her third term in the Rajya Sabha, having been re-elected in July 2022.
She has been the Minister of Finance and Minister of Corporate Affairs since May 30, 2019.
Earlier, she served as India’s Minister of Defence from September 3, 2017, to May 30, 2019.
Sitharman also held several other important portfolios, including Minister of State (Independent Charge) of the Ministry of Commerce and Industry from May 26, 2014, to September 3, 2017, and Minister of State in the Ministry of Finance and Ministry of Corporate Affairs from May 26 to November 9, 2014.
Her parliamentary journey began in June 2014 when she was elected to the Rajya Sabha, and she was re-elected in July 2016 for her second term.
Before her tenure in the Union Cabinet, she served as a member of the National Commission for Women from 2003 to 2005.
Over the years, Sitharaman has played a significant role in shaping India’s economic and defence policies. Her leadership in finance and corporate affairs has been widely recognised as instrumental in advancing India’s development goals.
