The average monthly GST collection stood at Rs 1.84 lakh crore, the highest since the implementation of GST in 2017. GST collections have increased steadily over the years, from Rs 11.37 lakh crore in 2020-21 to Rs 20.18 lakh crore in 2023-24, reflecting robust economic activity and improved compliance.
Recent GST collections reflect positive growth for India’s economy, underlined by strong domestic consumption and rapidly growing import activity. These figures bode well for the country’s fiscal health and economic reform efforts and indicate resilience amid global uncertainties.
The Goods and Services Tax was implemented in the country from July 1, 2017 and the states were assured of compensation for any revenue loss caused due to the implementation of GST for a period of five years as per the provisions of the GST (Compensation to States) Act, 2017.
The GST Council, formed under the Constitution to guide GST policy, has played a key role in shaping the system. It is headed by the Union Finance Minister and comprises the finance ministers of the states and other key officials.
Since its formation in 2016, the Council has held 55 meetings in which several important decisions have been taken to make the GST system simpler and more business-friendly.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced from the ramparts of the Red Fort on August 15 that the next-generation GST reform will be implemented by Diwali. The next meeting of the GST Council is scheduled to be held in Delhi on September 3-4, and the reform agenda is expected to be discussed there.
