IMD issues yellow alert for Kerala: Heavy rainfall expected August 26–28

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for several districts of Kerala. It has warned of heavy rainfall in the next two days due to the influence of a low pressure system over the northwest Bay of Bengal. Officials have urged residents to remain vigilant as strong winds and intense rainfall are expected on Tuesday and Wednesday. According to the IMD, heavy rainfall ranging from 7 mm to 11 mm in 24 hours is likely at isolated places over the state from August 26 to 28.

Northern and central Kerala are expected to be the worst affected.

On Tuesday (August 26), a yellow alert has been declared for Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod districts. The next day, i.e., Wednesday, the alert will be applicable to Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, and Kasaragod as well as Ernakulam.

The IMD has also issued a warning to fishermen, advising them not to venture into the sea along and off Kerala, Karnataka, and Lakshadweep coasts during this period. Wind speed is expected to reach 40-60 kmph, making sea conditions unsafe. Coastal residents have been asked to exercise caution.

Heavy rains and strong winds caused widespread damage in Kerala earlier this month, uprooting trees, damaging houses and disrupting power supply in several districts. The state is still recovering from those impacts, and authorities are concerned that another round of heavy rain could cause disruptions again.

Disaster management officials have directed the local administration to be prepared, including setting up relief camps in vulnerable areas if water levels rise.

Residents have been advised to avoid unnecessary travel, stay away from waterlogged roads, and follow safety guidelines issued by the government.

While the southwest monsoon remains active, the low-pressure system developing over the Bay of Bengal will play a crucial role in determining the intensity of rainfall over Kerala in the next few days.

With a yellow alert already in effect for both Tuesday and Wednesday, officials have stressed the importance of increasing vigilance in warned districts.
