Everyone dreams of visiting the Maldives, with its white sand beaches, turquoise water and luxury resorts. The destination has long been seen as the ultimate tropical escape. But for many people in the UK, the cost of getting there and staying even a few nights makes it completely out of reach. Luckily, there are alternatives.
And one lesser-known island destination is now turning heads for all the right reasons. With crystal-clear lagoons, coral reefs, and budget-friendly beach stays, this tropical gem has everything you’d expect from a paradise island, without the luxury price tag. The island is called Palawan, and it’s found in the western Philippines.

Home to limestone cliffs, hidden caves and some of the world’s clearest waters, it has become a favourite among travellers looking for adventure, relaxation and affordability all in one place.
There’s kayaking through still lagoons, island-hopping tours between powdery beaches, and world-class snorkelling among colourful coral and sea life.
For those who prefer to stay on land, motorbike rentals offer a cheap way to explore small villages, local markets and quiet stretches of coastline.
According to travel experts at the Experience Travel Group, Palawan is often compared to the Maldives for its natural beauty, but with a big difference in price.
The experts say visitors can enjoy “many of the same experiences” for a tenth of the cost.

A spokesperson said: “Palawan has a unique combination of natural beauty, adventure, and affordability.
“Travellers can enjoy many of the same experiences they would in the Maldives, such as pristine beaches and turquoise waters, but at a fraction of the cost. It’s becoming increasingly popular among travellers who want a tropical paradise experience without overspending.”
Accommodation in Palawan ranges from small beachfront guesthouses to mid-range resorts, with prices starting as low as £25 a night, according to the experts at the Experience Travel Group.
That’s a huge saving compared to the Maldives, where even basic resorts often start at £400 per night.
Dining is equally cheap, with fresh seafood, grilled meats and local dishes often costing just a few pounds.
Tour operators offer budget island-hopping packages, and snorkelling or diving trips to famous sites like Coron’s shipwrecks or the Puerto Princesa Underground River are widely available.
While Palawan doesn’t have the overwater villas that made the Maldives so famous, the sunsets, calm waters, and overall experience have led many travellers to call it the “Maldives of the Philippines”.
The experts at the Experience Travel Group added: “Its natural beauty, clear waters, and abundant activities make it a comparable destination for travellers seeking a tropical paradise at lower costs.”
To get there from the UK, most visitors fly to Manila, then take a short domestic flight to Puerto Princesa or El Nido.
From there, many beaches and resorts can be reached by tricycle, minivan or boat, all relatively affordable and easy to arrange.
Popular spots include El Nido’s hidden lagoons, Nacpan Beach, and Honda Bay, all known for their postcard views and peaceful settings. Meanwhile, multi-day tours offer a chance to fully explore the archipelago’s quiet corners and remote islands.
For those who’ve always dreamed of a luxury beach break but can’t afford the Maldives, Palawan offers a stunning alternative, with just as much beauty, and far less expense.
