In a significant milestone, India has successfully concluded a free trade agreement with the United Kingdom (UK) as well as a Double Contribution Convention. Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that the landmark agreements will further deeper the comprehensive strategic partnership between the two countries.
The agreements will also “catalyse trade, investment, growth, job creation, and innovation” in both economies, PM Modi wrote on microblogging site X (formerly Twitter).
The Prime Minister also said he looks forward to welcoming his British counterpart to India soon.
Both leaders described the development as a historic milestone.

The UK Prime Minister said the landmark trade deal with India is “fantastic news for British business, British workers, and British shoppers, delivering on our Plan for Change”.

“Shri Narendra Modi and Prime Minister of the United Kingdom Sir Keir Starmer had a telephone conversation today. The two leaders welcomed the successful conclusion of an ambitious and mutually beneficial India-UK Free Trade Agreement along with the Double Contribution Convention,” read a statement by the Indian Prime Minister’s Office (PMO).

Both leaders agreed that the landmark agreements between the two big and open market economies of the world will open new opportunities for businesses, strengthen economic linkages, and deepen people-to-people ties, it noted.
The bilateral Comprehensive Strategic Partnership will foster trade, investment, innovation and job creation on both sides, the PMO wrote.
The trade pact covers is set to significantly boost bilateral trade between India and the UK, and generate new avenues for employment, raise living standards, and improve the overall well-being of citizens in both countries.
The agreement will also unlock new potential for both countries to jointly develop products and services for global markets.
