Focus on strengthening India-US ties
In a post on X, Jaishankar said he was “pleased to meet Ambassador-designate Sergio Gor of the US today in New Delhi”. He added that the two discussed the India-US relationship and its global significance, extending his best wishes to Gor as he prepares to take charge of his new assignment.
Gor, who arrived in India recently, is expected to formally present his diplomatic credentials in the coming weeks, according to the US Embassy. His visit marks one of the first key engagements aimed at reaffirming the momentum in bilateral cooperation across defence, trade, and technology.
Earlier in the day, Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri also met the US envoy-designate. MEA spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal said on X that the two had a “productive exchange on the India-US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership and its shared priorities”, adding that Misri conveyed his best wishes to Gor for his upcoming tenure.
Jaishankar and Gor had earlier met in New York on September 24 on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA). The US State Department had said after that meeting that both sides looked forward to “further promoting the success of the US-India relationship”.
During his Senate confirmation hearing on September 12, Gor described India as a “strategic partner whose trajectory will shape the region and beyond”. He underscored India’s economic rise, military capability and geographic position as central to promoting regional stability and shared prosperity.
He also referred to what he called the “deep friendship” between US President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi, describing it as a foundation for advancing bilateral cooperation.
Gor’s nomination by President Trump in August as Ambassador and Special Envoy for South and Central Asian Affairs comes at a time when New Delhi and Washington continue to navigate complex trade and tariff issues. His appointment, is seen as a signal of Washington’s intent to sustain a strong partnership with India across strategic and economic domains.
