Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday launched infrastructure projects worth over Rs 5,125 crore in Arunachal Pradesh. The initiatives, covering energy, connectivity, tourism and healthcare, are aimed at accelerating the state’s long-term development.
Major boost to hydropower capacity
At the launch event held at Indira Gandhi Park in Itanagar, Modi virtually inaugurated two large hydropower projects in Shi Yomi district.
The Tato-I project, with an installed capacity of 186 MW, will be executed jointly by the Arunachal Pradesh government and the North Eastern Electric Power Corporation Limited (NEEPCO). With an estimated cost of Rs 1,750 crore, it is expected to generate around 802 million units of electricity every year.
Add Zee Business as a Preferred Source
The Heo project, planned on the Yarjep river, will add 240 MW of capacity at a cost of Rs 1,939 crore. Once operational, it is projected to produce 1,000 million units annually. Together, the two projects are expected to significantly enhance Arunachal Pradesh’s role in hydroelectric generation in the north-east.
Convention centre for Tawang
In Tawang, the Prime Minister also laid the foundation stone for a convention centre to be developed under the PM-DevINE scheme. With a budget of Rs 145.37 crore, the facility will seat more than 1,500 people and be equipped to host large conferences, cultural programmes and exhibitions. Officials said the centre will meet international standards and serve as a hub for tourism and regional engagement.
Connectivity, healthcare and safety upgrades
Alongside energy and tourism, Modi inaugurated additional projects worth Rs 1,290 crore. These cover improvements in road connectivity, expansion of healthcare facilities, and strengthening of fire safety infrastructure across the state. Government representatives said these initiatives reflect a comprehensive approach to building modern infrastructure in Arunachal Pradesh.
The programme was attended by Governor KT Parnaik, Chief Minister Pema Khandu and Union Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju. Officials said the new projects underline the Centre’s commitment to accelerating development in Arunachal Pradesh and integrating the region more closely with national growth plans. With these investments, the state is set to expand its energy capacity, boost tourism and modernise public services, paving the way for sustainable development in the North-east.
