“This year, the southwest monsoon is likely to set over Kerala on May 27, with a model error of four days,” the IMD said.
Typically, June 1 marks the official onset of the country’s rainy season, which spans 4 months. Post that the monsoon rains head northwards and cover the entire nation by mid-July.
Last week, the IMD forecasted the monsoon to arrive over the south Andaman Sea and adjoining areas around May 13; if it happens, it will be a week earlier than last week.
Mrutyunjay Mohapatra, Director General, IMD, earlier in May said that this time around the ocean-atmospheric conditions favour early arrival as well as on-time progress of monsoon in India.
Over the last 5 years, the southwest monsoon arrived early in 2021, 2024 (May 31) and 2022 (May 27).
