Stock to Track: HPCL Visakh refinery project in advance stage, capacity reaches 15 million tonnes, say sources

Hindustan Petroleum Corporate Ltd shares are set to be in focus on Wednesday. State-run HPCL’s ‘Visakh’ refinery in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh, is in an advanced stage of modernisation, sources told Zee Business. A slew of updates executed under the Visakh modernisation project have helped the refinery reach 15 million tonnes of crude oil processing capacity, they said.

The sources also said that emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) are being utilised to enhance the monitoring of the project.

The addition to its current estimated capacity is the result of a number of steps, including the addition of a new crude oil unit, hydrogen plants, a vacuum gas oil hydrocracker, and sulphur recovery plants.

India’s refining capacity has grown exponentially in the last decade

As of June 2025, the country’s refining capacity stands at more than 256.8 MMTPA, marking a significant increase from 215 MMTPA in 2014.

During this period, the PSU has expanded its capacity from 14.8 MMTPA to 24.5 MMTPA.

Part of the country’s pipeline network spanning more than 25,000 km, HPCL’s Visakh–Vijayawada–Secunderabad Pipeline (VVSPL) exemplifies this shift, minimising road traffic, carbon emissions, and cost inefficiencies, according to a statement.
