Telangana Flash Floods: Heavy rains inundate villages, damage roads, crops

Heavy rains in several parts of Telangana triggered flash floods, inundating low-lying areas, ruining roads, and crops. Streams, rivulets, lakes, and ponds are overflowing due to incessant rains under the impact of a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal.

The reservoirs were filled to the brim due to the heavy inflow of water from upstream, forcing the authorities to open the gates to release water downstream.

Heavy rains since Sunday have devastated Medak district. Floodwaters due to the overflowing of reservoirs have damaged roads in some places, disrupting road transport.

The road was washed away near Pambanda in Shivampet mandal of Medak district. Road connectivity was cut off between Usirikapalli and Veldurthi. The road between Neelakantipalli and Alladurgam was also washed away.

The famous Edupayala Durga Bhavani temple in Medak district was submerged following the release of water from the Singur project due to heavy inflows into Manjira, a tributary of the Godavari river.

The flash floods also caused extensive damage to crops in Medak, Sangareddy and Siddipet districts.

According to the Telangana Development Planning Society, Gowraram in Siddipet district recorded the highest rainfall of 23.58 cm during the last 24 hours ending at 5 am on Monday. Mulugu in the same district received 18.63 cm of rain. Islampur in Medak district received 17.85 cm of rain.

32 places in Medak, Sangareddy, Siddipet, Kamareddy, Yadadri Bhuvanagiri and Nizamabad districts received more than 11.50 cm rainfall.

Due to continuous rain for the last one week, more than thousands of acres of crops have been destroyed in some districts.

Heavy rains have caused floods in the United Adilabad district. A man who went fishing at Kadam Project has gone missing. Officials are searching for him with the help of drones.

Meanwhile, the water level of Godavari rose to 34.8 feet at Bhadrachalam in Bhadradri Kothagudem district.

Coal production at the state-owned Singareni Collieries Company Limited (SCCL) was also disrupted due to heavy rains. 40,000 tonnes of coal production was affected as floodwater entered the mines.

The IMD has predicted extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in Bhadradri Kothagudem district on Monday. A red alert has been issued for Bhadradri Kothagudem, Mahabubabad and Mulugu districts.

Heavy to very heavy rainfall is likely to occur at isolated places in Jayashankar Bhupalpally district while heavy rainfall is very likely to occur at isolated places in Adilabad, Hanumakonda, Kamareddy, Khammam, Komaram Bheem Asifabad, Mancherial, Medak, Nirmal, Sangareddy, Suryapet, Vikarabad, and Warangal districts.

Lightning and gusty winds (30-40 kmph) are likely at isolated places in all districts of Telangana.
