Trump finally brokers end of war? Israel prepares for Gaza peace plan Stage 1 after Hamas vows responsible position

In a significant development on Saturday, Israel agreed to stop bombing Gaza as suggested by US President Donald Trump in what he described as his 20-point peace plan to stop the war in the Middle East. Sharing a statement by the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza on social network Truth Social, Trump urged Israel on Friday to stop bombing the region. Hamas is ready for peace, Trump wrote.

Acknowledging Hamas’s response, Israel PM Benjamin Netanyahu’s office said the country was “preparing for the immediate implementation of the first stage of President Trump’s plan” for the prompt release of all the hostages. “We will continue to work in full cooperation with the President and his team to bring the war to an end in accordance with the principles set out by Israel, which are aligned with President Trump’s vision,” wrote the office.

This marks a major breakthrough in Trump’s peace mediations. The 47th US president has made a series of claims this year of having established peace in several major geopolitical conflicts, including between India and Pakistan. Trump has even touted himself as the only person capable of achieving peace in Gaza.

Although Hamas will be releasing hostages while accepting some of the terms mentioned in his peace plan, according to Trump, a range of vexing issues remain to be resolved. Meanwhile, most of Trump’s claims about being a peacemaker remain in dispute. The Republican American president, who assumed office in January after defeating Democrat Joe Biden last year, has time and time again claimed efforts to end a two-year-old war in the Middle East.

Hamas’s response to Trump’s 20-point plan followed the US president’s ultimatum to the group until Sunday to accept or face consequences.

“Out of keenness to end the aggression and genocide being carried out against our steadfast people in the Gaza Strip, and stemming from national responsibility, and in defense of the constants, rights, and higher interests of our people, the Islamic Resistance Movement Hamas has conducted in-depth consultations within its leadership institutions, broad consultations with Palestinian forces and factions, and consultations with brothers, mediators, and friends, in order to reach a responsible position in dealing with US President Donald Trump’s plan,” stated the Palestinian militant group.

“Hamas appreciates the Arab, Islamic, and international efforts, as well as the efforts of US President Donald Trump, calling for an end,” Trump wrote, quoting Hamas.
