US reportedly proposes NATO-like security assurances for Ukraine

The US has proposed NATO-like security assurances for Ukraine, according to news agency AFP.

The proposed guarantees will provide Ukraine with a distinct security assurance without formally joining NATO.

Russian President Vladimir Putin has reportedly agreed to the proposal, which has also been shared with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

Zelenskyy will travel to Washington on Monday to engage u in talks with US President Donald Trump.

Earlier on Saturday, Trump said Ukraine should make a deal to end the war with Russia because “Russia is a very big power, and they’re not”.

Trump and Putin have engaged in multiple rounds of talks in Alaska that began on Friday.

In a subsequent briefing with the Ukrainian President, Trump said Putin had offered to freeze most front lines if Ukrainian forces ceded all of Donetsk, which has been among Russia’s primary targets.

Zelenskyy rejected the demand, foreign media reported.

The meeting was the first US-Russia summit since Moscow launched a full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022.
