Messaging platform WhatsApp recently announced that it banned over 98 lakh crore accounts in India during June 2025 under part of the company’s continued efforts to prevent misuse and harmful activities on the platform.
Out of these, nearly 1.979 crore accounts were proactively banned—before receiving any user complaints. In addition to these bans, WhatsApp also acted on complaints received from Indian users during the month.
The platform received 23,596 complaints, and action was taken on 1,001 accounts, which involved either banning accounts or restoring previously banned ones after review.
A major portion of the complaints—16,069 cases—were related to ban appeals, of which 756 accounts faced action. While other complaints involved account support, product support, and safety-related concerns.
According to Whatsapp, its abuse detection system works in three stages like during account registration, while sending messages, and based on negative feedback such as user reports or blocks.
The tech company said that prevention is its main focus, as stopping harmful activity in advance is more effective than responding after the fact.
Reinforcing its commitment to user safety, WhatsApp said it uses end-to-end encryption, safety tools, and a dedicated team to fight abuse, misinformation, and security threats. It also works with experts to promote cybersecurity and protect the integrity of elections.
