World Cotton Day 2025: Farmers urge buying Cotton from government over private companies

World Cotton Day is celebrated on 7 October every year globally. The day serves a reminder of cotton’s immense contribution to the global economy, trade and sustainable livelihoods. It was first celebrated on October 7, 2019 at the World Trade Organization (WTO) in Geneva.

It is recognized as one of the most widely produced natural fibres which is cultivated in more than 75 countries across five continents. Cotton supports millions of people, especially in least-development countries (LCDs) where it remains a key source of income and employment.

The 2025 celebration, held under the theme “The Fabric of Our Lives,” aims to symbolize cotton’s role in weaving together communities, cultures, and economies around the world. The event will take place today, at the FAO Headquarters in Rome.

Zee business reported that cotton procurement in Telangana is expected to begin this week with the Cotton Corporation of India (CCI) and ginning mills agreeing to start purchases.

Farmer organisation are urging farmers to wait for government procurement instead of selling to private companies, which often offer lower prices. Registration on the Cotton Farmer App will provide full MSP benefits

The India government has set up 550 cotton procurement centres, which have been operationalised across all 11 cotton growing regions, ensuring accessibility for farmers and logistical efficiency during peak arrivals, IANS reported.
